Synopsys Expands Its Linux Product Portfolio With Availability of Complete High-Level Design Suite
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.----Oct. 9, 2000--Synopsys,
Inc. (Nasdaq:SNPS), the technology leader for complex integrated
circuit (IC) design, today announced the availability of a full tool
suite for high-level design on the popular Linux operating system(OS).
In addition to the complete RTL synthesis solution with Synopsys'
flagship product Design Compiler(TM), the extensive list of Linux
products includes PrimeTime®, Synopsys' industry-leading gate-level
static timing analysis tool for System-on-a-Chip (SoC), Scirocco(TM)
high-performance VHDL Simulator, and Module Compiler.
Increasingly complex designs require design teams to rely on large
networks of high-performance workstations and servers. Low-cost,
reliable, Intel®-based computers, running Linux, provide an ideal
design and development platform because of their ability to fit easily
into an existing UNIX environment. The availability of Synopsys'
synthesis and verification solutions, combined with the improved
price/performance ratio of hardware, provides designers of complex IC
and systems-on-a-chip (SoCs) with a high-throughput, low-cost design
and verification environment.
``We're in a very fast moving industry requiring a quick response
to market needs. This can be very expensive when adding traditional
high performance compute capabilities on a regular basis,'' said
Guntram Wolski, director, VLSI at Creative Advanced Technology Center
located in Scotts Valley, California. ``The availability of Synopsys
synthesis tools in addition to the already ported simulation and
verification tools running on Linux will enable us to meet these
additional requirements at a lower total cost.''
``We make some of the world's most demanding chip designs that
drive design cycle time. Using powerful Synopsys products on
Intel-based Linux workstations and servers provides a new level of
productivity that helps our engineering teams shorten design cycle
times and stay on budget,'' said Paul Chermak, vice president of
marketing manufacturing industries at SGI. ``We are proud and excited
to contribute our Linux and application performance expertise in
working with Synopsys to help bring its industry-leading product
portfolio to the entire Linux community.''
``We are pleased to see Synopsys provide their premier suite of EDA
tools on Intel-based platforms,'' said Anand Chandrasekher, vice
president and general manager of Intel's Architecture Marketing Group.
``This gives designers a real choice in workstation and server
hardware. With the performance of Pentium® III and Pentium III
Xeon(TM) processor-based workstations and servers and the attractive
price points provided by Intel OEM system manufacturers, customers can
take advantage of real performance enhancements at significant
savings.''
Synopsys Move Expected to Ripple Through Industry
``We believe our broad support of Linux will cause the whole EDA
industry to follow suit. This is another example of Synopsys leading
the industry to give our customers access to the most popular
operating systems,'' said Raul Camposano, senior vice president and CTO
at Synopsys. ``From start-ups to the largest corporations, our
customers have asked for access to Synopsys products on the Linux
platform. We responded to market needs by porting our industry-leading
verification tools to Linux last year. Now, with the support of SGI to
complete the Linux port, we're delivering the majority of our core
products, with more to follow in the near future.''
Synopsys was the first major EDA company to make its tools
available on the open source operating system when it ported its
VCS(TM) Verilog Simulator, VERA(TM) testbench automation tool and
CoverMeter code coverage application in early 1999. Since then,
thousands of Synopsys verification and simulation seats have been in
production using Linux.
Production Availability
The following products will be available on Linux Red Hat version
6.2 the first quarter of 2001. Behavioral Compiler(TM), BSD Compiler,
